CFCA

PRESIDENT'S REPORT

July 1999

Hello Everyone,

As we head on into the summer months, the fun never ends here at CFCA! June was a very busy month, but we have so much more to look forward to. On July 18th , Shelley is planning a bowling party at Aloma Lanes. This is always a good time. Also the Rally to Mt. Plymouth has been rescheduled to July 31st.There will be more about the events later in the newsletter.

I would like to take this space to congratulate all of the winners at the World of Golf Village Car Show. And CFCA also took home the award for the club with the most cars in attendance. We had 9 CFCA cars there and all of them looked fantastic. So did the owners! Look for an article later in this newsletter for details.

I guess this is as good a time as any to start organizing the Caravan Crowd. If you are planning on going on the caravan in September, please let me know. Especially if you do NOT have a room. If you have been with this all along, still let me know you are still planning on going in September. If you have a room reserved and you can’t go, this would be the perfect time to let one of our club members who would like to attend take over your room reservation.

I would like to set a date that we can drive out to Daytona USA. We have not been there for a while and I hear some things (like the movie) have changed. Maybe some Sunday in August. If there are any places you like to frequent, please let me know. We have lots of weekends in the fall to fill up with fun!

Also, those who attended Clarks Fish Camp this last weekend, SOME of us were disappointed that they ran out of prime rib before MOST of us were served. I would like to do a drive out to St. Augustine and then head up to Clarks Fish Camp so we are there when they open (4-4:30 P.M.).

If anyone has not gone online to check out our website www.cfca.net, please do it!

So everyone, stay tuned, there is always something happening! Remember this will be ‘The Best Year Yet!’

Have a ‘Cool" July!!

Save the Wave

MEMBERSHIP REPORT

Hello All!

July is here, the temperature is rising and the afternoon rains are in full swing.

Last month I reported that CFCA reached the Century mark and like the heat of the summer, our membership is rising! We are now at 104 members. Please join me in welcoming our newest members Viktor & Christina Mikkelsen and Bubba & Becky Winn. Both have emails so please update your list.

Mikkelsen: flaxil@earthlink.net

Winn: becky.winn@mail.sprint.com

Bubba and Becky were members of CFCA back in ‘76, ‘77 & ‘78. How cool to have members come back to the club after 21 years!!!

We had quite a few events last month but the wedding of KC & Tammy took the cake (no pun intended). There were over 40 of us who showed up in New Smyrna Beach to wittness KC & Tammy take their wedding vows (right before the clouds opened up on us). Prior to the ceremony, we were handed the traditional bird seed to throw and the untraditional bubble water to blow. Now, can anyone imagine what we would do with that!!!! We had tiny bubbles flying everywhere. Mr. Dan and Willy showed up in their tuxedo t-shirts, top hat and formal shorts for the gala event.

After the ceremony the majority of us headed over to the reception at Charlies Riverside. The restaurant was not expecting us for another hour or so but they did open the bar up for us. As we arrived at the bar, we discovered that Don Ashe had christened the bar with his credit card so our drinks were on Don. Thanks Don!! After a couple of drinks we all headed up to the private room for the reception. Once we were seated, well most of us anyway, it seemed some of our members could not find a table to sit at and one member in particular (I won’t mention any names) politely told the manager if you want me to sign the bar tab I would suggest you get me a table to sit at! I wish you could have seen these people carrying a fully set table for 10 (including glassware) up this flight of stairs! Talk about a magic act... After we were all seated, the food was served, the cake was cut, and the toasts were said and said and said... It was a very beautiful day. After the reception we drove over to the car show for a couple of hours and enjoyed the rest of the evening together. Congrats KC & Tammy!

I am still working on the new membership directory and hope to have it in the mail with the August Newsletter. I will also have updated cell phone cards at the second meeting in July. If you need one, please come up and see me as these do not get mailed.

I have 13 more orders for Eckler’s shirts and will be placing that order July 2nd.

Homecoming Season is right around the corner! For our new members, CFCA partakes in local high school homecomings during the months of Sept., Oct. and Nov. Homecomings are our major source of income and a good portion of this money raised is donated to The Russell Home for Atypical Children. We need your support during these months. Typically we do anywhere between 8 and 12 homecomings a year. Shelley Schwartz is our Homecoming Chairperson and schedules with the local schools.

A goal this year is to do more homecomings than we’ve ever done before. But, in order for us to make that goal we need you to participate. We don’t want to turn anyone down this year because we can’t meet the car requirement. It usually takes 2 hours to do a homecoming & generally we all go out for a bite to eat afterwards (hey, no surprise there!). So when you get a call from Shelley (and you will) asking for help with an upcoming homecoming, please do you best to help her out. Remember, your efforts ultimately help Mrs. Russell and all of the children she cares for.

Vettes at the Village Car Show

Contributed Article

June 19, 1999 by Lisa Lafferty

Everyone loves to see a car show! But it takes extra special people to do this in the rain! Some of our members headed up to St. Augustine early on Friday the 18th to get a head start on the cleaning & preparing for the show on Saturday. Unfortunately, Mother Nature had other ideas! Some of us (who have regular jobs!) had to wait until after 5pm on Friday to get on the road. I was listening to all of the traffic reports during the day, and what a mess I-4 was. So in trying to avoid adding my name to any statistics, I took the long way up there. But the rain found me, the traffic slowed to 40 MPH in some places. People pulling over because you can’t see 10 feet in front of you, but I was determined to get to my destination and kept moving.

I arrived at the Village around 8:30 P.M. (I left Orlando at 5:45) and everyone was in the parking lot waiting for me. It’s nice to have a welcoming like that! We all walked over to the hotel at the Village and took over the bar area to get a bite to eat. There was no mistaking the Corvette people from the golf people. And, by far, we were having way more fun! They had some fireworks and entertainment. We walked around for awhile and decided to call it a night. The rooms were fantastic. These are little furnished apartments, complete with screened in porches overlooking the 18th green.

7am came pretty quickly, and Jon, Pat and I were off to breakfast. When we arrived, surprisingly enough, we were the only ones there. But our stomachs were calling and we sat down and prepared for the day ahead. Now it was off to wash the car. It was really dirty. After the drive up in all that rain, Yuck! But KC was prepared . He purchased a hose & bucket after he gave up on looking for a car wash! So I took advantage of that, and tried to clean the car up as best I could. Again I didn’t see any other club members, except for the wet cement where the hose was set up, this was the only evidence that anyone was there before me!

So off to the car show. I got a premo spot right in front on the lakefront. I finally caught up with all of our other members and they spent their morning cleaning their cars and had not had breakfast yet.

Oh, yes, I felt a little guilty but was prepared for the day ahead. All the cars looked great. There were 130 cars in this show. 170 were registered but the rain kept some people away and the waiting game had begun!

So sit and wait until the judges come by. Most of our club members were together, but some of us were spread out all over this huge complex. My first judge for the exterior was Lynn Skipper (former president of CFCA). Oh, I knew I was in trouble! He was very professional as he told me about the things I could do better. Since there were actually six shows in one. I could get my car judged six times! Or, you could just let the judge know that he could use whatever score you had for all the shows. I chose to be judged twice and I did okay. I wound up with a Top 50 Award and a Second place in my NCCC class. Most of our members received awards and our club won an award for having the most cars in the show. I was very proud of everyone who put their heart and soul into this show. It took a lot of sweat and hard work and after all that hard work and sweat it was time for "SOUP!!"

It didn’t take long to gather everyone and off to Clark’s Fish Camp! We arrived around 7pm and it was packed! No parking anywhere! So those of us that parked on the street, started combing the parking lot for spaces. We were following people to their cars and directing traffic to get everyone a space! Once we were all safe inside, the waiting time was 1½ hours. Our party started as 22 people. As the night went on, they announced that they were out of prime rib (this WAS the reason we went there in the first place!) After the moans and groans were over, our party shrunk down to 15 people and we finally got to go to our table. Somehow Dan Dragonetti got served a prime rib! I still don’t know how he did that! But we were finally full and happy campers.

As we pulled out of the parking lot, I felt so lucky to be a part of this wonderful club. The members ARE the reason we are so successful, you are all like my family and thank you for a wonderful week-end!

NCCC Concours Events

Tech Article

First of all, thanks are in order for the members that made the (wet) trip to St. Augustine for the Vettes at the Village show. To those that participated in the NCCC show: Well Done!

Also, thanks to our members that came out to take in the show and support CFCA: Jeff Bennett, Jon & Pat Gardner, Brenda Reeves & Bob Harden, Rusty & Nina Williams and Willy & Pam Theiss.

For some of us, this was our first experience entering an NCCC Concours event. I think everyone will agree that it was enjoyable and truly a learning experience!

So, what about all these classes? Confusing? Maybe so, maybe not... Here’s a brief summary of how things lay out (source: NCCC Sanctioned Competition Program, 1996-1999, aka the "Rulebook").

A Concours D’Elegance (Concours) is a "Show or contest of vehicles and accessories in which the entries are judged cheifly on excellence of appearance and turnout". The Concours had its origin in Europe, but came into its own in America in the late twenties and early thirties. A typical Concours is conducted by a local NCCC club that has applied for and received a sanction from its Region Competion Director. For the event, all Corvettes are separated into one of six groups which generally represent cars within a reasonable range of the same level of preparedness. The classes are:

Concours Prepared (C/P): subdivided into 6 groups (A-F) based upon the year of the vehicle,

Modified (MOD): subdivided into 6 groups (A-F)

Street Show (S/S): subdivided into 6 groups (A-F)

Wash & Show (W/S): subdivided into 6 groups (A-F)

Race Prepared (R/P): single group for all years

Custom Group (CUS): subdivided into 2 groups (A-B)

Exhibition Class (EXH): single group for all years, for display only and are not judged

The basic separation of cars for a Concours event is between the more serious show cars and those that are driven regularly. Most CFCA members tend to fall into 1 of 2 classes:

The "Wash & Show" group is for those who drive their cars regularly and wish to participate but do not have the interest or time to detail the car to the same standards as the "show cars". Cars are judged with the hoods closed in this class.

The "Street Show" group is for entrants who drive their cars regularly and are willing to more completely prepare their car, but are still not comparable to the fully prepared (and often trailered) cars. Cars are judged with the hoods open.

Participants in these groups must be able to verify "regular usage" of the car (defined as a minimum average of 50 miles per week between NCCC Concours events).

When do we get a chance to do it again, you may ask? Well, why not plan now to participate in the 23rd Annual Miracle City Mall Concours for Charity, held inside the mall in Titusville on August 14th, hosted by the Titusville Corvette Club. This is an NCCC sanctioned event (FL-028, 029, 030, 031). Entry fees are $40 prior to August 9th for all 4 shows, or $15 for Display-Only. Registration is from 7:30-9:30 A.M. Cars must be inside the mall by 10:00 A.M.

For additional information, contact me, see the NCCC Rulebook or watch for future articles right here in the CFCA Review.
