PRESIDENT'S REPORT

Hello Everyone,

As we see March go into the history books, I can say we did it right! We had something going on every weekend and sometimes two things at one time! We are continuing to increase our membership at an unbelievable rate. And this fact I owe to all of our members. When new people come to our meetings and we can make them feel at home, we have done our job! It took us until September of last year to get to 90 members and we have already reached that level. Congratulations to all of you, this is your club and it seems you are making the best of it!

So here it is April. We have Dixie Crossroads to look forward to..’More Soup, Please’ And some of your board will be attending the C5 Birthday Bash in Bowling Green on the 15th, 16th, 17th and 18th. We are hoping to get the inside scoop on the year 2000 car and maybe a peek at the 2001. I understand that the week we will be there, they will be building some 2001 prototypes. I know I have an unusual interest in the progress of the year 2000 car, but this can benefit everyone. We will scope out the travel route to Bowling Green for September and see if the caravan pick the same one. Also check out the Quality Inn Maybe stop in and have a little visit with our wonderful hostess for September!

Oh yes, I did attend the Sebring race with several of our fellow members and had a great time! We were fortunate enough to get to park all together in the C5 Registry Corvette Corral. Along with that was a tent to sit under when it got hot and even a TV to watch the race on. The stands we sat in were right on turn 17 and a BMW lost it on our turn! Wasn’t much left of the car when he finally stopped, but what an experience that was!

So everyone, stay tuned, there will be more fun events on the way! Remember this will be ‘The Best Year Yet!’

Have a wonderful April, Happy Easter! See you all at Dixie Crossroads on the 10th!

MEMBERSHIP REPORT

Hello Everyone and Welcome to Spring!!!!!!

April is here, the trees are blossoming, the clocks are turned ahead and the temperature is rising. I guess we can stop wishing for winter and start praying for some rain!

Membership:

I missed the last meeting on April 1st. so I am not sure if any new members joined. Everyone give a big welcome to our newest members, Tammy Smith and Ken (KC) Ozut. They joined the club on our drive out to the Speedway Spectacular in Daytona Beach last month. This brings our membership to 92!!! We also had George Landis, Jeff Bennett and Matt Terrill join in March. Wow, are we on a roll or what! Looks like my goal of reaching 100 members has a very good chance of becoming a reality. I love it and I have to agree with Lisa’s comments..... This is YOUR club. You the members, make it great. YOU are the reason others come to events and drive outs. YOU are the reason we are growing! Thank you.

Merchandise:

The club shirts are in! Our stock has been replenished. The Eckler’s Cutter & Buck shirts have been ordered. R.J. has been out of town but I will get in touch with him to find out how long it will take for the shirts to be finished. Our total order was 27! There are still some people who owe me money for them. Please get it to me ASAP! It was $35 for a C4 or Cross Flags shirt and $45 for a C5 shirt.

As I stated in the March meeting, I am going to bring our club merchandise to the second club meeting each month. I will bring the different color shirts, a few club shirts and the rest of the club merchandise so if anyone wants to purchase it they can. Please remember to support your club and buy club merchandise....

That is all for now... Hope to see everyone at our next club event which is the cruise out to Dixie Crossroads. It should be a lot of fun. Till next time.

Remember... SAVDWAV!

Joan

GOVERNOR'S REPORT

Hey Gang

Summer is at hand, and the Region and our CFCA is doing very nicely, thank you. When you stop to think about what we've already done so far this year, its apparent that things are going well indeed. The NCRS event at Disney, the Rolex 24 Hour event that let us lap the famed Daytona International Speedway, the parties at the Ashes' and the Gardners', the Hooter's outings, and outstanding increases in club membership all show that times are good.

I attended the Florida Region meeting on March 7th. As I have already alluded to, the Region is in good hands. In talking with Lynn Skipper, our Regional Membership Director, I understand that he is in contact with several groups wanting to start up an NCCC club in Osceola County and one in the Vero Beach/Ft Pierce area. The possibility of these two clubs would be a good addition to the Region and I certainly support the prospects. Nationally, the NCCC is working on updates and upgrades to the Competition Rule Book. This is a process that occurs every three to five years and is necessary to keep up with changes in cars, technology and class assignments. If all goes as planned the new books should be available sometime after the first of the year. Additionally, NCCC is looking at the possibility of a small increase in membership dues and possible changes in National Convention format. I have received a questionnaire in which to vote the club's wishes along those lines.

As all of you may know, the National Convention is being held in Denver this year. What you may not know is that the Convention is being held in Michigan in 2000 and maybe San Diego in 2001. These are fantastic events and always fun.

If anyone is interested in pursuing one of several Florida Region officer positions please let me know. This year, the Treasurers position, Competition and Membership Director positions will be available at the end of this year.

TECH STUFF

Cooling System

The most common complaint made by the Corvette owner is overheating. On a recent visit with Lisa to her favorite Corvette shop to have a little work done on her car, I received a little education and a very wide pair of eyes. This was because I saw first hand, the debris that can collect up around the radiator and A/C condenser. Several large hand fulls of straw, leaves, and dirt were removed from this area of her car. So read on dear club members and maybe this information can help lead to some discoveries of your own.

First, the C4 Corvette has no front grille. Therefore, it relies heavily on the air deflectors underneath the front bumper to direct airflow through the radiator to dissipate heat. Damaged or missing deflectors will cause overheating. The bottom-feeder design also works wonderfully as a vacuum cleaner for our roads, but the downside of this is that the Corvette's radiator becomes highly susceptible to accumulating debris, which will reduce airflow and therefore increase operating temperatures.

The airflow restrictions occur when junk and dirt is collected in the small space between the A/C condenser and the radiator. Most of this is not visible until the top radiator shroud is removed and the radiator is viewed from the top. Removal of this shroud isn't as involved as it may first appear, and periodic removal and cleaning is very effective in keeping the temperature down. While I say that most of this debris may not be visible without removing the shroud, if you are agile enough sometimes you can get a hand full of leaves out by laying on the ground up under the front of your car. There are slight differences in the cooling area design between earlier and later model C4's, so the bottom route may or may not be effective for your situation. Also, be sure to inspect the A/C condenser, since it's installed in front of the radiator.

NCM REPORT

News from the National Corvette Museum

In case any of you have some spare time in April, there is a big C5 Birthday Bash planned for April 16-18 at the National Corvette Museum. This will be the second annual event of the type and promises to be another occasion to enjoy your Corvette with new friends.

This year's event is a must for anyone who loves the new C5 and wants to learn more about it from the people who made it happen. Chevrolet will host an outstanding lineup of speakers, each of whom will lead seminars and be available for questions and autographs. Speakers at the Birthday Bash will include:

David Hill: the Corvette's Chief Engineer will discuss C5 innovations from an insider's point of view.

John Cafaro: the C5's Chief Designer will be on hand as well as to share stories about the once top-secret design process behind the "best Vette yet".

Jim Campbell: Brand Manager for Corvette and Camaro, Jim will join Dave Hill in a question and answer session.

Ken Brown: Ken's seminar topic is "Engineering C5 Corvette Racecars".

John Heinricy: Heinricy is currently driving one of the C5-R race cars competing in the GT2 competition.

In addition to this outstanding panel of speakers, the Birthday Bash will also provide you with the opportunity to enjoy the company of friends who share your enthusiasm for the Corvette and the Museum. Should you have any questions regarding the C5 Birthday Bash, please contact the National Corvette Museum at 1-800-53-VETTE.

See Ya there...

Jon Gardner
